Metallization

The zinc-copper plasma plating process is a technique used in automotive restoration to protect metal surfaces against corrosion. This process involves applying a thin layer of zinc and copper to the metal surface of an automotive component to prevent corrosion and ensure good adhesion of paint or other surface treatments.

Here is a general description of this process:

  1. Surface preparation: Before plasma metallization is applied, the metal surface must be properly prepared. This may include cleaning the surface of dirt, grease, rust and other impurities. It may also be necessary to remove old layers of paint or other coatings.

  2. Plasma zinc-copper coating: The plasma metallization process involves using an electric arc gun to generate a jet of plasma that heats a thin wire of zinc and copper until it melts. This plasma is then projected onto the metal surface of the automotive component. When the molten metal hits the cold surface, it solidifies and forms a thin, adherent layer.

  3. Solidification and preparation for finishing: After the application of plasma metallization, the zinc-copper layer must be completely solidified before being subjected to other surface treatments or being painted. Some techniques may involve rapid cooling of the surface to accelerate solidification.

  4. Additional finishing and protection: After solidification, the surface can be sanded or otherwise prepared as required. An additional protective layer, such as paint or varnish, can then be applied to provide additional protection against corrosion and other environmental factors.

The plasma metallization process offers advantages such as excellent adhesion, corrosion resistance and the ability to cover complex shapes or hard-to-reach surfaces. It is an effective and durable method for restoring car components damaged by corrosion or other forms of degradation.
